Installation
For online play with both Sonic Riders DX and Sonic Riders Regravitified, you need Dolphin Emulator, which will act as a Gamecube and a Wii on your PC. While this can be scary and complicated if you don't know what you're doing, this guide will help you get it all setup, and once that's done, it's a breeze. Rest assured, Emulators are perfectly legal, and this one is perfectly safe to use.
Download Dolphin Emulator here - https://dolphin-emu.org/download/
If you have any issues at all, ask in the tech support channel of our Discord for help - You can find our Discord on the home page
Which version to download?
The short answer is the top one.
Under the downloads section, under the releases section, and under the red banner saying you require something technical.
It doesn't matter when it was released, or what number it is, grab the first one for the operating system you are currently using. The ARM in Windows refers to the processor you have (as opposed to Intel or Nvidea), in all likelihood you do not need this one.
So, about that required Redistributable thingy
This link will take you to a very complicated looking page, but the important part will be the download link highlighted to the right. This is an official Microsoft website and product, so again, perfectly safe.
All you need from it is this download link shown in the green circle, just scroll down a little to see it, then run what it downloads accept everything etc.
Why is Dolphin a 7z?
This is a compression format commonly used for transferring files. You will need some tool in order to get Dolphin out of it so to speak. A commonly used free one is this - https://www.7-zip.org/
Simply download the top one and once it's all installed you should be able to right click the .7z file and extract the files and click okay. After that you can delete the .7z file, you don't need it.
If you are organized this is the point at which you move the Dolphin-x64 folder inside to wherever you wish to keep Dolphin on your PC.
For ease of use for working with Dolphin's files, create a blank text file called "Portable" in the Dolphin folder
How do I open Dolphin?
Simply click the Dolphin application, you can ignore all other files, just the one with the Dolphin icon named only Dolphin.
What settings? Where are my games?
In the top tab there will be a config button, which will open this window.
One tab at a time, we'll get to games. Please note the tab each screenshot is off.
Make sure auto updates is set to releases and tick enable cheats.
(It's worth noting that while enable Dual Core does improve performance, it can cause flickering player models in RG/ZG in Netplay when fps dips under 60).
While the interface is entirely optional, it is recommended to tick and untick everything as shown in the screenshot to the right, with the exception of your preference in language, theme and style of course.
Here you add your Games folder and tick "Search Subfolders".
If you don't have a folder to keep your legally acquired GameCube and Wii games, then make one to put them all in and select that folder. This will make all your games appear on the front screen of your Dolphin.
You can leave all the other tabs alone, with the possible exception of if you want to turn down the audio slider in the audio tab if it's too loud.
How do I make it run? And look good?
Click on the Graphics button in the top of the window This will require some user thinking.
In General, copy the settings shown in the screenshot to the left. Your adaptor will vary based off your computer, just make sure it is NOT set to Microsoft Basic Renderer Driver.
If after this tutorial you are still struggling to run the games at a stable fps, untick V-sync and select Skip Drawing.
Copy the settings shown in the screenshot to the left.
The exception and big ones are Internal Resolution and Anti-Aliasing. Make your own guess as to what you can run it at, and raise or lower it afterwards to get the best experience for your PC.
If after this tutorial you are still struggling to run the games at a stable fps, lower Anti-Aliasing and Internal Resolution, these are the two biggest impacts on performance and lower (higher up on the list) they are, the less lag you will have and the worse the game will look.
If after the tutorial you are running the games just fine, or know you have a great gaming computer, you can raise these accordingly too for a better experience, do not bother changing the other settings regardless.
Copy the settings shown in the screenshot to the left.
Copy the settings shown in the screenshot to the left.
Controller Setup
Yes you have to manually do this! Dolphin isn't going to know what buttons on your Xbox controller, Keyboard, Fight Stick, DK Bongos, etc. correlate to which GameCube button unless you tell it!
Both DX and RG require only an emulated GC controller, do not use a Wiimote, emulated or otherwise.
To the right is an example setup for an Xbox controller. The important parts are the controller settings window (press configure to open up the port 1 mapping window) and the fact you need to select your personal input device in the top left of the port 1 mapping window. Once you've done that, click a box and then tap the corresponding button you wish to assign to it. It is also recommended you calibrate your control sticks
What about Custom Textures?
Luckily, Dolphin makes these super simple! Textures can be made by anyone, as Dolphin does the modding part for you, feel free to ask in the Discord to learn about making your own, no technical knowledge needed and very little artistic skill either (unless you're really serious about it).
You can find textures both in our dedicated Texture release channel in our Discord, as well as on Gamebanana.
Textures are just image files! So once you've downloaded them don't worry, it is correct, be careful not to change the names of any of them.
As shown on the right there is a Textures folder buried in your Dolphin folder, if you do not have this in the place mentioned in the path at the top of the picture, you missed the Important Step earlier!
You will need to create the two folders yourself, GXEE8P are for DX (And unmodded Riders) and SRZE8P is for (only) RG. Place your custom texture in the appropriately named folder. It doesn't matter where, but be careful, you don't have two files with the same name trying to replace the same texture, otherwise it will likely load the one you didn't want, sod's law, so be careful not to have duplicate names.
How do I play with a friend online?
Using Dolphin's built in Netplay feature, you can connect play with anyone in the world. You can find our guide for it here:
We would really recommend not using Parsec, as people who are not the host are the only ones who experience lag, which is unfair. With Dolphin Netplay, you will all have identical play experiences.
